Effective treatment in 14 weeks
For everyone involved it is of course important to know what the effects are of treatment at U-center. For this purpose, we compare the extent of complaints before and after our 14-week treatment programme. We do this by means of nationally validated questionnaires. The results, like many other healthcare providers in the Netherlands, are delivered anonymously to Stichting Benchmark GGZ (SBG). SBG publishes reports comparing the results of different mental health care providers in the Netherlands. The table below shows that the effectiveness of treatment at U-center is significantly above the national average.

Treatment effective over the long-term
Naturally U-center also investigates how our clients maintain their recovery over the longer term. We continue to measure how our clients are progressing during the year after treatment. Clients complete the same questionnaires at fixed periods. In this way we gain insights into our clients’ progress for general complaints.

The graph below shows the treatment results for 2017, from the initial evaluation (VM), immediately after the residential phase (TM), after the outpatient phase (NM), 4 months later (FU1), 8 months later (FU2) and 12 months later (FU3). During the residential phase, there is a sharp drop in symptoms, which (understandably) increases slightly during the outpatient phase when the skills learnt are put into practice at home. After that, improvement continues until the final evaluation, one year after the treatment at U-center.

Client satisfaction rating

In addition to the level of complaints, we also measure how happy our clients are on a scale from 0 (very unhappy) to 100 (very happy). At the start of the treatment our clients score an average of 17. Their happiness score continues to rise and one year after treatment is on average 62.

U-center also measures client satisfaction both numerically and in open comments at various moments. Clients give a rating to, among other things, the content of their treatment, their actual treatment, and our centre’s facilities. For the two different ratings, during 2017, our clients awarded us with x and y. Our management team discusses the open comments every week. We are happy to receive the useful suggestions that clients give us and that help us to constantly improve treatment at U-center even more.

Scientific and Clinical Advisory Board

Effective treatment is grounded in the most up-to-date scientific knowledge. U-center works closely together with leading scientists for this purpose. For example, U-center has its own Scientific and Clinical Advisory Board that shares the most recent scientific insights and advises on U-center’s treatment methods and quality of our treatment programme.

The Scientific and Clinical Advisory Board meets periodically and is composed as follows:

  • Dr. Carolien Martijn, director and senior lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology and Neurosciences, Maastricht University;
  • Prof. dr. Dr Dike van de Mheen, professor in Tranzo, Tilburg University;
  • Prof. dr. Dr. Koen Schruers, senior lecturer in Psychiatry and Neuropsychology, Maastricht University;
  • Prof. dr. Dr. Frenk Peeters, endowed professor of Treatment of Mood Disorders, Maastricht MUMC +, Virenze Riagg;
  • Prof. dr. Dr. Fred Zijlstra, Professor of Labour and Organizational Psychology, Maastricht University.

Scientific research

U-center conducts scientific research in collaboration with Maastricht University. This research focuses in particular on product development and improvement. U-center offers Maastricht University the opportunity to conduct patient-related research for which ethical medical approval has been obtained. In this way, new therapies may be added to U-center’s current programme of treatment in the future.

Publications and researches

As you can tell, U-center attaches great value to science and proven effectiveness. Many publications, presentations and master theses have been written by and about U-center. These can all be found in the appendix.
