Drug addiction

Drug addiction treatment

Sometimes people take drugs purely for recreational use. The active ingredients in drugs activate the brain’s reward system leading to a brief change in consciousness. It is possible to become addicted to many different drugs, that is when U-center offers help.

How can you tell if someone has a problem with drugs?

Drug use produces mental effects and activates the reward center in the brain. On the basis of these effects, drugs are divided into three categories: narcotics, stimulants and consciousness-altering (hallucinogenic) drugs. Initially, the effects can be pleasant as problems fade into the background. However, such effects are only short-lived. When someone is addicted to a drug, they regularly crave it. A drug addiction can be very persistent. The effects and characteristics of a drug addiction are very dependent on the type of drugs you use.

Different types of drug addiction

A drug addiction could be expressed in different ways. It could vary from light to a more serious addiction and is also spread across a wide range of different types of drugs. Here you can find two very common types of drug addiction.

Cocaine (also known as coke or snow) has a locally numbing effect and acts as a stimulant. It comes from the leaf of a cocoa plant that grows in central America. It is usually snorted in powder form. It can also be smoked in pure crystal form (crack).

What are the short-term effects of taking cocaine?

  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • Insomnia
  • Excitability
  • Exhilaration
  • Anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Psychotic complaints (paranoia, hallucinations)

What are the long-term effects of taking cocaine?
Over the long term, taking cocaine can affect nasal cavity tissue and result in malnourishment, apathy and severe mood swings. Drinking alcohol at the same time produces cocaethylene which can cause acute oxygen deficiency in the heart muscle.

Cannabis and marijuana intensify your mood. Cannabis or hash gets its name from the active ingredient THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which comes from hemp resin. Marijuana or weed comes from the same plant, but is usually made from dried stems, leaves, and flowers. Both are usually smoked together with tobacco in hand-rolled cigarettes (joints). They can also be eaten, for example in pot brownies or space cake, and hash oil can be drunk.

What are the short-term effects of taking cannabis?
Since cannabis enhances the user’s mood, it can be used as both an intoxicant and stimulant. An excited user can have a fit of laughter, while someone who is feeling low can become depressed. People usually say they take cannabis or marijuana to relax. Below is a list of some of the main short term effects.

  • Red eyes
  • Increased heart beat
  • Dry mouth
  • Weak muscles
  • Hunger
  • Sleepiness
  • Change in the perception of time, space and sound
  • Heightened imagination

What are the long-term effects of taking cannabis?
If you have an addiction to cannabis, and you have used it excessively over a longer period of time, it can have the following long-term effects:

  • Inactivity (lack of motivation)
  • Slowing down
  • Problems concentrating
  • Reduced awareness
  • Development of psychoses
  • Extreme or altered emotions and sensory perception

Cannabis can also affect the immune system. An accumulation of THC in fatty tissue can damage the brain, liver and ovaries. Smoking joints increases the risk of (lung) cancer.
